London, as we know it, effectively began in Roman times. It is conceivable that earlier settlement occurred but to date, there is, we believe, no evidence for anything major. Some timbers, dated at about 3500 years before present suggest that there could have been an early bridge or maybe a landing stage. Londinium, as London was known in Roman times, was founded on the present site of the city of London, a few years after Claudius' invasion of AD43. It is now thought to have been a civilian settlement rather than military. It was destroyed by Queen Boudicca (Bodicea) about 10 years later, but in true London Fashion, it bounced back. London has bounced back on many other occasions too, after the Plague, the Great Fire of London, the Blitz on London during the second world war and more recently IRA and other terrorist attacks.

Essex is regarded as mainly a commuter county, but it does have some archetypically English countryside (the north of the county is part of 'Constable country') plus a good number of historic houses and castles. Middlesex is one of the smallest counties in the UK and a large part of it is swallowed up by Greater London.

Lying just to the north of Middlesex is Hertfordshire, a medium sized county with the typically rolling countryside of the south of England.
